Root Chakra – Grounding & physical reality – This chakra is found at the base of the spine and it connects us to the earth. This chakra represents the basic necessities of life. The ability to be grounded, to be present in the here and now. The ability to allow one’s self to be nourished, in the sense of allowing one’s Inner Being to be satisfied. This chakra also reflects a person’s connection with their mother, and with Mother Earth. How the person feels about being on the earth and their connection with the physical body. At the root of our daily life is our family, sustenance, nurturing, clothing, home, work, and shelter.. The root chakra is the basis upon which every body system relies upon for stability and support. This chakra brings our talents, skills, thoughts and desires into physical existence. In order to keep a balanced and practical grip on reality this chakra needs to be clear, open and functioning to its maximum. Even if we are working well in our other centres, if the root chakra is not operating, then our skills will not be able to birth into physical reality. You may know of many gifted people who are unable to bring their gift into physical form. It is here that our goals are anchored and brought into life. If you are not grounded, then feelings of unreality are common. You can be a brilliant thinker, artist, musician, or other, but without physical grounding, will be unable to bring your skill and knowledge into a form where it can be used on the physical level. Healthy exercise is needed to keep the body active and energise this chakra.
There are many imbalances within the root chakra. If too much of our energy and consciousness is focused on the root chakra we can become overly materialistic. Life becomes a means of acquiring more and more physical possessions. We can become too attached to physical life and when this happens the upper chakras are minimally open. There are also those who are very open in the higher chakras but who are not earthed. These people may not want to be here on the earth at all, and try to escape it in this way because they experience life as being too harsh, too dense and too shocking and an escape is needed.
The root chakra is the grounding force that allows us to connect to the earth energies and empower our beings. The root chakra is related to the anus and the adrenal glands. When poorly grounded, your spatial understanding is impaired. You may stumble around physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Grounding enhances your ability to function effectively on a day-to-day basis.
When we have a decision to make, we can listen to the signals of the root chakra: Uncomfortable sensations are a message to be alert and reconsider, while pleasant feelings indicate that a given course of action is likely to meet our needs for safety and nourishment.
Root Chakra Affirmation
The Root Chakra channels the earth’s energy up to our higher chakra centers and helps to ground us on the physical plane. The more we ground ourselves the greater chance we have of making our dreams real and developing into the people we would like to become. When we lose our connection to the earth, we cut ourselves off from the healing source of Mother Earth. We disconnect ourselves from our ability to lovingly care for and nourish ourselves as well as to provide the physical comforts we need. When we become disconnected, we become one of life’s victims.
The dysfunctional archetype of the Root Chakra is the Victim. The victim feels helpless, stuck in a state of fear, with no sense of empowerment. Being a victim is paralyzing on the psyche and the body. In order to survive both emotionally and physically, it is essential to ground these feelings and to reconnect with the earth. Many people may not realize that they carry traces of the victim mentality within their personality, but it may emerge during times of stress or crisis. If they were to stop and experience the feelings they have about life they may be surprised at the depths of the anger, fear, resentment, and frustration they carry inside them.
The healthy archetype of the Root Chakra is the Mother. The Mother represents our ability to nourish and look after the life force within us with care, sensitivity, and vigilance. Integrating this archetype is essential to our development, because she teaches us how to take care of ourselves and to respect our needs. She helps us integrate the feminine aspects of our personality so that we can develop our capacity to love – love ourselves, love all people, love life. As we develop the Mother within ourselves, we stop projecting our needs onto the world around us so that we are able to look after ourselves.
Grounding is essential for balancing the Root Chakra. One way to do this is to imagine roots coming out of your Root Chakra and the soles of your feet going deep into the earth. The roots of a large tree spread deep underground, anchoring the tree into the earth, use your creative visualisation to imagine roots, going down from your body plunging into the depths of the planet and spreading out, just like the roots of that tree. Envision the prominent bulky roots extending downwards below the surface, broadening from the base of your spine. These roots are the essence that will, enable you to draw into your body the positive frequency of the mother earth. You are now beginning to feel the awareness of a reaction from the planet deep below the surface coursing into your space. As this occurs, you visualise the bulky roots that are beginning to entwine with the waters inside the planet’s core, these waters represent the unconditional love, healing the rarefied energy of the Earth. As your roots entwine with the Earth energy use your senses to experience the awareness of unconditional love.
There are many ways to balance our chakras. Many people use crystals such as Ruby, Bloodstone, Smoky Quartz, Hematite, Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, and Garnet. The stones can be carried in a pocket, placed in the area of the Root Chakra or at the bottom of the feet, or made into an essence.
