The E numbers in your food – what to watch out for

An E number is a reference number given to food additives. We often think that since it was approved in specific food, it must be safe. The E numbers and other food additives can be harmful to the body and cause problems particularly in people with high sensitivity and those who suffer from allergies. Adults and children suffering with behavioral problems such as ADD, autism, concentration problems, eczema, psoriasis, IBS and many other diseases are susceptible to food additives.

When buying products, keep in mind that if the dosage of the E number is below the limit required by the law to be listed, it will not appear on the label. Products which have medium to long shelf lives and these which are brightly coloured (including red meat and fish) have most likely been treated with some of those additives.
As always, the best solution to avoid these is to buy raw foods and prepare your own meals.

Here are some very common E numbers to avoid:

  • Sulphite (E220-E227)
  • Sorbic acid (E200)
  • Potassium sorbate (E202)
  • Tartaric acid (E334)
  • Annatto (E160)
  • Benzoic acid (E210)
  • Monosodium glutamate (621)

Mostly added to alcohols like wines and beers and in fruit juices.

The following are common food colours to avoid for better health:

  • Sunset yellow (E110),
  • Tartrazine (E102 yellow),
  • Amaranth (E123 red),
  • Cochineal (E120 red),
  • Carmel (E150)
